The 40 km Lake Loop – A Must-Do Ride Around Lake Annecy

The 40 km Lake Loop – A Must-Do Ride Around Lake Annecy

This 40 km ride with moderate difficulty (300 m of elevation gain) is accessible to almost everyone: it’s easy on an electric bike, and also doable on a regular bike for motivated riders without specific training – as long as you take your time.

Sporty cyclists can complete the loop in around 2 hours. But for holidaymakers who want to take in the scenery, allow about 4 hours including short breaks. With stunning lake views, frequent beach stops, and the option for an ice cream or a swim, the Lake Annecy bike tour is a highlight of any stay – an activity in itself! It’s a must-do in good weather, whatever the season.

Looking for the Less Strenuous Route?

Start from Sévrier and cycle clockwise towards Annecy. This avoids tackling the Talloires hill on the uphill stretch – a climb of 100 m over 1.5 km at a 6.5% gradient. Instead, you’ll enjoy it downhill with the wind in your hair (under your helmet, of course!). This way, the ascent is more gradual, spread over 8 km, especially between Annecy and Veyrier-du-Lac, and then again between Menthon-Saint-Bernard and the top of the Talloires hill.

Prefer the sometimes Quieter Route?

Try going anti-clockwise, heading south through Duingt and around Le Bout du Lac (the southern tip). This way, you’ll finish your ride in Annecy’s Old Town, perfect for a well-earned break and stroll before returning to your apartment in Sévrier.

Safety First!

Safety First!

The lake loop is extremely popular in peak season. Most of the ride is along a shared greenway used by cyclists (from beginners to pros), rollerbladers, scooters, pedestrians, joggers, and sometimes dogs – on or off leads.

This mix of users and experience levels can lead to avoidable accidents. A helmet is essential (!) – even if it's less "Instagrammable". Don’t forget the basics: water, sunscreen, a mini pump, and puncture spray.
